Keeping The Border Jumpers At Bay
posted (July 13, 2020)
DHS Manzanero has also noted the growing numbers of COVID-19 cases in the Mexican municipality of Othon P. Blanco - which includes Chetumal, Botes and all those communities along the Rio Hondo.

At midday yesterday they had 883 active cases and 48 related deaths, with one of the highest rates of infection in Mexico.

What's alarming is that Othon P. Blanco is just a skip across the river from many of Belize's northern villages.

And if you think that a global pandemic has put a definitive halt in cross-border movement, you'd be wrong. This morning ACP Myvette told us how they've been capturing border jumpers throughout the State of Emergency.

Cherisse Halsall:
"What's being done to police other areas where the borders are porous."

ACP Joseph Myvette
"From the start of the state of emergency there have been a number of patrols across those illegal border crossing points and if you are aware a number of persons have been captured in those areas and those operations continue to be in those areas."

Cherisse Halsall:
"And then last night Sir the Director of Health Services came out to say that there might be more cases detected in Orange Walk area, and he has recommended in the case of community spread a lockdown, what are police prepared to do to contain that crowd and not have a situation like the one we saw in San Pedro?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Well that will dictate when that when that directive is handed down by the committee the police and the BDF will affect those mandatory vehicular checkpoints as well as all other directives in relation to state of emergencies."
