Dr. Manza On Double Anxieties: School & PGIA
posted (July 15, 2020)
So, the double anxieties of the airport opening on August 15th, and schools opening 5 days before are very much on the minds of Belizeans in the middle of July.

Today, Dr. Manzanero discussed both looming events - and said that at some point, the community has to make informed decisions about living with COVID 19 - because it's gonna be around for a while:

Dr. Marvin Manzanero - Director of Health Services
"The issue keeps coming up what about schools and I know there is a valid concern, elements of fear, fear of the unknown, fine. But if we don't want to open schools then I would assume that we are going to be protecting our children, but I see children everywhere. I see children in market areas, out walking, we just got ask earlier today in one of our social media pages if children can be out on the street after 6-8pm. I almost felt like responding what would a child be doing after 8pm on the street to begin with. So I'm saying this because I can appreciate the situation the concern about the school, but if we are exposing our children right now in public forums and there is no real need then you understand how difficult it is going to be. This is here for the next 2 years, so I can appreciate people saying we don't open schools now, is it going to be then for school year 2022 and what do we do then for the next 2 years. I think we need to also think of that. Again, I can appreciate people saying don't open the schools, then what are the options, because we are being ask to guide situations. We can't be living in a bubble. I don't know what's going to happen come August 15th. I do know that one of the 3 airlines has said they won't come in August, they said September. Many dynamics happening and I think the school if we follow the plan if we allow the ministry of education and we can help them answer some of the questions, if we follow the plan that they have set out we can appreciate what is intended in that, because we are not here to just open because we want to open. We have to understand that we are not living in a bubble, that it's here for the next 2 years and that we will have to learn to live with Covid-19."
