UDP Tony Talks Of Unity
posted (July 15, 2020)
And while Saldivar appears to have fallen in behind Faber, will his closest allies like Dr. Angel Campos and Frank Pawpa Mena do the same? That's left to be seen, but one of Saldivar's most faithful allies, UDP Standard Bearer for Corozal Southeast Tony Herrera says he's not going anywhere.

This, despite credible reports we had received from his political associates who say Herrera had indicated on Sunday that that he was not prepared to serve under new leader-elect Patrick Faber. We could not reach him for comment yesterday, but Herrera told 7News via phone this afternoon that he remains in the race as southeast standard bearer, and committed to the UDP. Here's his interview with Jules Vasquez:

Tony Herrera, UDP Std. Bearer, Corozal Southeast
"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to clarify that erroneous broadcast from last night. My position still remains strong, I am a UDP by heart. I will continue to serve my people of southeast and I today I personally congratulate our new leader Hon. Patrick Faber and I will continue to do the same as I did under your past leader Hon. Dean Barrow. My position remains the same, I have nowhere to go, but to victory."

Jules Vasquez, reporter "Was there ever a moment in which you said that well my guy lost, perhaps the race was not that fair against Saldivar, so it doesn't make sense to continue. Did you ever briefly entertain that thought on Sunday after the convention result was out?"

Tony Herrera
"To e honest with you that never crossed my mind. Hon. Patrick Faber was victorious and I never thought about going anywhere, because at the end of the day I am here to serve the people of southeast whether it be under John Saldivar or Patrick Faber."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"If Saldivar, your close ally would have won, you would have been at the top of the food chain, so to speak, when it comes to campaign financing, when it comes to support from the party etc., now that a man who you opposed has won, do you expect that you will have any repercussions of this or that you will be last in line to get resources for campaigning from the party and the government?"

Tony Herrera
"Not at all, I feel no way that he will put me at the end of the line, not at all. We have not spoken since the convention, but we are like what you know, it's a healing process and I will indicate to you I have nowhere to go. I will work hand in hand with Hon. Patrick Faber."

Orange Walk North Area Rep. Gaspar Vega yesterday announced that he would not be running. He was one of Saldivar's staunchest supporters and considered no friend of Faber. This means the UDP now has to urgently find candidates to contest two seats it has held for the last three terms: Orange Walk North and Pickstock.
