They've been on remand awaiting trial for attempted for just over 4
years, but tonight 23-year-old Egbert Baldwin and 23-year-old Darwin
Prado are both free of that capital offense. That's they were acquitted
of a wild shoot out in 2016 in the courtroom of Justice Colin Williams.
It happened on May 14th, 2016, and resulted in the murder of
23-year-old Lionel Rhamdas. That's when a shootout happened at the
Lozano family home on Mirage Road in Ladyville. The late Casey Lozano
and 3 other men were outside his family yard when 3 gunmen approached:
two from behind and one from in front of the house. The gunmen opened
fire but one of the 4 men from Lozano's crew returned fire. It is
during that crossfire that one of the gunmen, 23-year-old Lionel
Rhamdas, was shot and killed. Three of the men who were in the yard
were also hit. Terence Flowers was shot in his right hand, chest and
the back of his neck, Casey Lozano was shot in his right hand and
Lyndon Gillett was shot in his right hand. Police investigated the
case, and they charged both Baldwin and Prado for Williams' killing.
Both men stood trial before Justice Williams, and Senior Crown Counsel
Shanice Lovell prosecuted along with the help of Romi Wade. She called
11 witnesses, one of whom identified the two accused men as the gunmen
who ran into the Lozano family yard and opened fire on the group of
people.
After the prosecution closed its case, Oscar Selgado, the attorney who
represented the men, made a robust no-case submission on their behalf.
He pointed out everything he believes were flaws in the prosecution
case, after consideration the judge agreed.
He then found both men not guilty. Baldwin walked out of court free
today while Prado was further remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
He'll remain there until his next trial date for Lionel Ramdas' murder.
