Corozal Man Executed In Sports Stadium
posted (July 27, 2020)
And while that is Orange Walk, the Corozal District has witnessed two murders in three days.

The first happened last week Wednesday in the village of Calcutta, and then there was another- likely an execution on Saturday morning in Corozal Town.

Cherisse Halsall has more:

It's designated to be used for football games and town fairs but sometime between 12;30 and 1:00 a.m. on Sunday morning Recalde Stadium in Corozal became the scene of a murder.

The victim, 23-year-old Jair Tammai, was found cruelly shot to the face. Neighbors heard the gunshots.

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Persons living in that vicinity reported to police that sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. on Saturday morning several shots were heard in that area as a result the scene was processed and the body was transported to the Corozal Community hospital where it was pronounced dead. Police are investigating this matter also and at this point in time, we do not have anyone in our custody."

Tamai's father says that it was an execution:

Joaquin Tammai, Father of the Deceased
"They did it intentionally. It was someone who lay waited him for something he'd done. I can't say because he never told me about his problems. But I think they killed him on purpose."

The last time the family saw him he was riding off on a friend's motorcycle.

Joaquin Tammai, Father of the Deceased
"A friend of his came to look for him on a motorcycle and he left with him. We waited the entire night and he didn't come. The only thing I could think was that they'd locked him up so I said well i guess tomorrow, Saturday, I'll go and see early if he's locked up. I got up and really had no idea what could have happened to my son. I got up to go to the police station. But a short while after i got up around 5:00 another friend came and told us that well, they had just found my son in the stadium, dead. I didn't believe it. My other son grabbed his bicycle and went to see."

"He's the one that confirmed that it was him. That was the last day that I saw my son and his other friend had come to get him around 2:00 more or less, two in the afternoon."

Jair's friend and drinking buddy has been questioned and provided his father with details about the last hours of the young man's life.

Joaquin Tammai, Father of the Deceased
"They were drinking and then he left him."

Reporter:
"What time of the day was that?"

Joaquin Tammai, Father of the Deceased
"That was around 11:00 or 12:00 at night. He had to have left. I'm sure my son was already drunk. And really if you're drunk you're not able to explain exactly what happened because if he was liquored up what he should have done was find his house. But he went somewhere else, or they took him and they killed him, I can't say."

This afternoon Joaquin Tammai could only lament the joys that Jair will never get to experience

Joaquin Tammai, Father of the Deceased
"The real truth is my son was happy because his wife is pregnant and in the next few days is going to have a baby. So I knew that my son was happy. I don't think he had any enemies and if he had them well he didn't tell me about it."

"I put in in the hands of the police let them they do their work and do it well and that they whoever they arrest that they punish them and that's all I can ask that they bring about justice."
