Taiwan’s Record Number of Scholarships, While Borders Remain Closed
posted (July 27, 2020)
Taiwan has had breakthrough success fighting COVID 19, limiting the number of cases, and the number of deaths. And part of the key to their success is keeping their borders mostly closed.

But, that hasn't stopped the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the ICDF from offering Belizeans a record number of university scholarships.

The ceremony to announce this and welcome the scholars was held on Saturday at the Biltmore - even if they aren't going to Taiwan just yet. Here's more from the Ambassador:

H.E. Remus Li-Kuo Chen, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize
"This year we have the record high of recipients for Belizean students studying in Taiwan MOFA comes to 15. It used to be only like 5-6 and for ICTF there will be 33, so altogether the total number is 48, so we are very happy about the growth and we continue to do everything we can, the best we can to make sure we have these very good number of scholarships to be given to Belizean students."

Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education
"In the history of education in Belize we have not had a greater benefactor than the government and people of Taiwan with 48 scholarships this year."

And, while there's lots of welcoming goodwill, there are no tickets booked yet. Here's why:

H.E. Remus Li-Kuo Chen, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize
"Up until now Taiwan central epidemic control center and ministry of education are pacing their steps in opening our borders for foreign students who have been admitted to study in Taiwan this fall. So far only 19 countries. Belize is not there as yet. We know the waiting without knowing how much longer the good news will come is not easy to deal with. Please stay confident, healthy and well prepared for the travel and study of several years of student life in Taiwan. The decision will come and it will be just a matter of time and patience."
