PM Defends Durability of Plan
posted (July 31, 2020)
But, is the plan, essentially a re-thread of initiatives we've heard before? And is it too little too late? That's what we asked the PM:..

Reporter
"When one reads this one has the sense that its rather hollow and transparent insofar as you're in the 12th year of being in government of your administration and a lot of these initiatives have been promised before without great successor effect and now to do this, I understand as part of an economic recovery but with just 100 days left in office seems superficial. Your comment."

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow- Prime Minister
"No, it's not superficial, it's a necessary immediate urgent response to the fact that events have overtaken us, to the extent that there is repetition of some of what we've said before. For example: when we talk about ease of doing business, about trying to free up those bottlenecks in various departments. I won't call any names. We all know them too well. That in deed has long been a cherished aspiration and we've not been very successful in achieving the removal of those bottlenecks. What has changed, the advent of Covid-19. In these sorts of circumstances where patriotism is very much on display. Surely we have a right to not only ask for, but to expect that those that to some extent were principally responsible for those bottlenecks will be motivated by same patriotism I'm talking about. There is no way we could simply have sat back and said let it be business as usual notwithstanding Covid and let us use as our excuse the fact that an election is imminent, no. We have tried to bring to the table a sense of complete urgency."
