Belizeans Scared After Weekend That Saw Record Number Of COVID Cases
posted (August 3, 2020)
Tonight, Belizeans are scared - after a weekend that saw 9 new positive tests for COVID 19 - the most ever. At least two of those cases are of considerable concern for the Ministry of Health tonight, because they are showing symptoms and so far, health authorities don't know where they got infected with COVID - 19.

To give you the full story, we start on Saturday when 8 positive cases were confirmed - which is a single day record since COVID testing started in Belize.

But, 6 of those were in quarantine - five of them repatriates - and one border jumper in Orange Walk. All 6 of these cases are asymptomatic.

And then there are the two other cases causing concern. Both are symptomatic and both are hospitalized. One of them is a female police officer in Corozal - and the Commissioner will tell us about her shortly. The other is a male from Orange Walk and latest information to the Ministry of Health suggests that he had contacts with someone involved in the contraband trade. Because his wife is a market vendor, whose contacts were extensive, measures were taken at the Orange Walk market - and you'll hear about that shortly.

And then, the 9th weekend case comes from San Pedro Town and that one is equally concerning because this patient had a very busy and involved social life. She is a female - an expatriate - who showed up at an island clinic with fever and respiratory symptoms and was hospitalized. Her contact tracing will be extensive and there could be a number of infected persons - you'll hear the Prime Minister speaking about that one shortly.

So, there's no clue yet as to where cases #57 on San Pedro or case #55, the police officer in Corozal contracted the virus. Contact tracing exercises are underway, with a large batch of samples of contacts just coming into the city this evening, and the extraction for processing tomorrow. More will be shared at a Ministry of Health Press conference at 10:00 am tomorrow, which you can see on Channel 7.
