PM & PUP Support Reinstatement
posted (August 3, 2020)
The PUP weighed in on the pending negotiation with the Port workers today. A release says, quote, "The People's United Party calls on PBL, if it has not yet agreed to do so, to reinstate those thirty-six (36) workers who were terminated on grounds of redundancy…Our people need their jobs to be able to support their families. It is the right thing to do."

As we understand it, that is a thick red line which is sure to come up in negotiations tomorrow, but today, the PM said, for once, Government and the opposition are on the same page:

Reporter:
"I think the PUP put out a release about the reinstatement of the thirty-six dismissed employees, any comments on that?"

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"Yeah, well clearly that's good because that has been our position from the start and that's why the whole question of nationalization came up. Well before this last series of events, I think you were here when I said in terms of there wanting to do the cruise port and wanting us to sign MOU's, sought out your industrial relations with these people first. We can't see our people suffering and then have the port closed and all that. So I'm happy the PUP is on board, I repeat that we, until the second aspect of the situation gets cleared up we are standing pat, standing firm."
