OW Case Linked to Contraband
posted (August 4, 2020)
"Where you gonna run to?" - that's how Dr. Manzanero put it - and for sure right now running to Orange Walk or Corozal is not a good move.

As we told you last night, the case in Orange Walk is a Santa Marta village farmer, whose wife and family works in the Orange Walk Town market. And while this was an unsourced case at first, the COVID link may prove to be through Mexican contraband, which the infected man purchased from his neighbor.

Here's more:

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services
"It's a farmer, ahm, he had mentioned that he had started presenting symptoms on July 28. the initial symptom was fever, and then he came to the hospital on the 30th of July complaining of shortness of breath, fever, cough, and he was admitted from July 30th, which would have been last week Thursday. And his sample was processed on Saturday, that's when the diagnosis was made. He had been taken care of by his relatives and children prior to him being admitted into the hospital, he denies any international travel or having contact with any confirmed COVID 19 case. They did indicate however in the further interviews that were conducted on Sunday that he heard, the wife had revealed that her husband had, in point of fact, been procuring contraband goods from a neighbour in Santa Marta village in Orange Walk. This family also indicated that they had been selling fruits and vegetables at a stall in the market and that is what I think triggered the closure of that market as of yesterday."

"We had also gotten note that he had participated at a meeting at the Santa Marta government school on the 21st of July and that some teachers and members of SIF and an environmental group had been present at that meeting."

"So this contact list that was given to us provided initially about 50 persons, but not all of them as I said are going to be swabbed. I had 25 people on the list that had been swabbed because as I said, your list is going to be stratified based on what you find."
