Tonight, a police constable is facing a charge of manslaughter by negligence after he allegedly ran over a Belize City man on Saturday, just before midday.
Police have identified the victim as 68-year-old Calvin Wright, who is originally from Morning Glory Street, but area residents tell us that they've spotted him behaving as though he is homeless. He is known to wander around the city, and at around 11:30, on Saturday morning, Wright was on Morning Glory Street, and multiple accounts say that he was somewhat in the road.
Constable Terrence Sutherland was driving a police mobile through Morning Glory Street when he ran over Wright. Internal reports we've seen suggests that the officer was unaware that he ran over Wright. Civilians quickly alerted the police to the incident, and Wright was rushed to the KHMH but he succumbed to his injuries.
Today, we spoke to one area resident, who asked that her identity be protected, and she told us that she believes that Wright suffers some sort of condition that causes him to regularly collapse on the ground. Here's what she had to say about what she saw on Saturday:
Voice of: Area Resident
"The morning, I saw the GSU in the middle of the street, but I saw them lifting someone. It was raining, so I didn't come out to peep and see who it was. Yesterday, when I heard on Love News that a homeless man was knocked, the first thing that came to my mind was the same old homeless man I see every day, who passes my house, go to the bank to beg, and come home back - or go wherever he goes. He is just a man, who sometimes, he would just - I don't know if he travels with sickness - but he always falls to the ground, and then, he takes a while to get back to his senses. But, I just hope his family gets justice for him because it is just unfair. They chanced that poor little old man."
