San Pedro Strong - Even Under Lockdown
posted (August 11, 2020)
And while the Central prison isn't accepting visitors, neither is San Pedro. As has been widely reported, that community is under state enforced lockdown.

Yesterday, the press asked the officer commanding what the crime situation has been like with desperation setting in for many who have lost their jobs or have no income:

Supt. Chris Noble, OC, San Pedro
"If you find one out of a hundred persons not wearing his mask, it is not wearing it properly. Everybody here has been abiding since we saw the rise in the cases and clusters being advertised. Here, San Pedro is San Pedro strong. I can't say that the people on this island are not abiding. As a matter of fact, when they see the irregularity, they call you and say we are seeing this here and before you get there that person already repaired what the problem was and it is not there anymore. Even though they call me, they are brave enough to approach somebody and say you are doing wrong."

And while many would dispute that claim, we also asked how compliance with COVID safety measures has been on the island - the first major municipality with confirmed community spread of COVID 19.:

"What are the safety measures at the police station when you bring in somebody?"

Supt. Chris Noble, OC, San Pedro
"You are welcome to visit, sir."

Reporter
"When the police arrest somebody from outside, you don't know if that person is infected. How do you go in handling that person to make sure that he doesn't spread the virus inside the police station?"

Supt. Chris Noble, OC, San Pedro
"1) the station is clean at least 3 times daily. 2) at detention it is the police protecting the police first and foremost. When I say that; wear your mask, wear your gloves, sanitized, wash your hands and you do the likes for the person that is detained. Again, I think you would agree with me that our detention process has severely affected because there is not much people that we are detaining."

Reporter
"What about other criminal activities on the island? We see that other persons are taking advantage committing robberies with masks on. What's that like on the island?"

Supt. Chris Noble, OC, San Pedro
"San Pedro has very good people. The people on San Pedro are concerned for the people in San Pedro and they are concerned with San Pedro, so San Pedro has no criminals. That's where I would put it. We don't have criminals on San Pedro."
