Change In Labour Laws to Benefit Stevedores
posted (August 14, 2020)
And back to our earlier story at the Port of Belize. As you saw, Port Staff who had been terminated were protesting.

And while they were out there, that government was in the House of Representatives changing the Labour Laws to benefit the stevedores who signed their collective bargaining agreement two weeks ago.

One of the prominent features of the CBA was an agreement on the hours of work. This had been an issue of contention for years, because the stevedores work sometimes…30 hour shifts to clear a vessell. But the law says you can only work 15, and then get 9 hours of rest. So that's what was put in the CBA, but making that work on the ground was turning out costly, difficult, and impractical.

So, today legislation was tabled and passed to make it so that they can have an exemption from that required night of rest - if the employee agrees with his employer:

The Prime Minister is the Minister of Labour.
