In his press conference today, the press also asked the Prime Minister about this weekend's congress that the executives of the Football Federation of Belize have scheduled for tomorrow at the San Ignacio Hotel in San Ignacio.
It's to elect a new executive of the FFB, but, as viewers are aware, it is currently illegal for any gatherings bigger than 10 people, since it can pose a public health risk. We have seen a letter from members within the community who have strenuously requested that the congress be postponed, given the ongoing spike in the number of COVID-19 cases. And, when the press asked the PM about the FFB's insistence to host this event tomorrow, he made it clear that the Government isn't going to allow it:
Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"They are not going to be allowed to go and cast their ballots sir. I had the… I don't know what official title he holds, but Sergio Chuc reached out to me and I spoke to the attorney general who was quite clear, Sergio told me that the arrangements they were making could be safely accommodated under the SI and the restrictions. I explained to him that really that was a matter for the attorney general who drafts the regulations and whose my and the government's legal advisor. He called the attorney general who in turn called me and the attorney general made it absolutely clear that this can not and will not be allowed to happen."
We have since been sent a memo, with today's date, from Earl Jones, the General Secretary of the FFB, which announces to the football community that the congress is still supposed to happen.
It says, quote, "Kindly note that due to force majeure and to protect the health of our delegates, the venue for the Congress has been changed to the FFB facility in Belmopan City. All accommodation and travel arrangements for delegates remain the same." End quote.
