And with those clean sweeps in the west and south, and 7 out of 8 in
the north, it becomes clear from very early on that the UDP was facing
a route.
By 7:00 pm, our in-studio team was predicting a blue wave, and by 9:15
pm - only three hours after the polls closed, Patrick Faber was ready
with a concession speech.
Indeed, it's the cornerstone of a healthy democracy, the indication
that a peaceful transition of power is about to begin. By 9:15 pm Faber
was in front of a teleprompter and ready to throw up the white flag. He
addressed the nation with the news that he had offered congratulations
to Belize's new Prime Minister-elect:
Hon. Patrick Faber - UDP, Party Leader
"Just a few minutes ago I called the Honourable John Briceno to express my
heartfelt congratulations for him and the People's United Part and to which
a successful administration, the challenges that he and his government will
not be easy and he will need all the support in order that he can see our
great nation through the long road of recovery, not just from the recent
floods but from the impact and effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. I call for
all of you, UDP, PUP and those who voted for the 3rd party and independent
candidates to choose national unity as we band together in the face of the
challenges we will, no doubt face. I salute all the candidates that put
they're name forward for these elections, you my compatriots understand the
yearning to serve, and if any are like me, you will never give up. While
there were winners and losers, the democracy that we have continued to
enjoy throughout the life of this great young nation is by far the greatest
winner today."
Faber also said the UDP will, quote,
"Take on the role as a formidable opposition in the house with the
same boldness that we took on governance over the last three
terms." End quote.
