The United Nations Population Fund; the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR; the United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF; and the International Organization are launching a series of Mobile Centers for asylum seekers and migrant communities in Western and Southern Belize.
These organizations say that Belize is currently home to approximately 51,000 migrant persons, and in 2010, 14.8% of Belize's total population accounted for foreign-born persons. Belize also hosts 2,394 registered and an estimated 3,400 more unregistered asylum seekers and refugees. They are mostly from nearby El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.
These mobile clinics will allow for these UN Agencies and IOM to coordinate humanitarian assistance and support, to respond to issues of migrants, refugees, and residents of their host communities.
The first phase occurred last Saturday and Sunday in Bella Vista Village. This coming Saturday, the mobile centers will head to Valley of Peace, and on March 13th, they will go to Benque Viejo Town.
The beneficiaries will be able to access a menu of critical health, legal and social services.
