From Domestic Violence to Baby Delivery
posted (July 6, 2021)
A police officer was shocked when, around 4:00 this morning, she heard an urgent knock at her door in Camalote village. When she opened it, she was face to face with her pregnant neighbor who was in labor and needed help getting to the hospital.

22 year old PC Ruth Lopez - who has only been a cop for a year - sprung into action, calling a mobile to pick them up from her Camalote home and take them to the hospital in Belmopan.

But when we spoke to PC Lopez, she told us that the mobile didn't get there in time, and that her 25-year-old neighbor needed urgent assistance since her water had already broken.

That was when PC Lopez instructed her to lie on the bed. She told us that she could already see the baby coming and quickly went to wash her hands. She then advised her neighbor to push, and when she couldn't anymore, the officer told her to press down on her belly.

Together, they were able to deliver the 7 pound baby girl safely. PC Lopez called the mobile and asked them to send an ambulance. The neighbor was then taken to the Western Regional Hospital, where she is still admitted with her newborn.

PC Lopez told us she plans to visit the baby soon but has to abide by the hospital's COVID regulations. PC Lopez has no kids of her own and works in the domestic violence unit.
