Earlier in the news, we showed you what Education Minister Francis
Fonseca had to say about the talks between the government and the
social partners. He also shared that the government will be meeting in
2 weeks with the joint unions to hear their concerns.
Well, the minister also intends to hold talks with the leadership of
the Belize National Teachers Union. It's part of his strategy to foster
a healthy working relationship with those key partners and he hopes to
make it quarterly.
He explained that all housekeeping issues related to the country's
education system will be on the table:
Hon. Francis Fonseca - Minister of Education
"It's a meeting between the ministry of education and the BNTU. We try
to meet on a quarterly basis, this one has gone a little beyond the
timeline because of challenges on both sides but yes we are meeting
tomorrow, ordinary business for the ministry to update the union on our
work and our activities and also to respond to specific issues that the
union wants to raise with us. One of the priorities for us and for me
as the minister of education over the past year has been to try to
improve and strengthen the relationship between the ministry of
education and the BNTU. When I became the minister I found that the
relationship had completely deteriorated and I think it's critically
important for us to have a good working relationship between the
ministry and the national teacher's union, so we've worked very hard at
that and tomorrow is another step in that process sitting at the table
together and sharing our concerns on issues of mutual concerns."
