Barrow Grills His Former Fin. Sec
posted (January 21, 2022)
At top of the news, you heard UDP Chairman Michael Peyrefitte explaining why he thinks that his Party Leader, Patrick Faber, should resign. That's the biggest news of the day, but for about almost 6 hours this morning, he and several other litigants were before Justice Sonya Young.

Peyrefitte is the claimant in a case for judicial review which he is brought against Prime Minister John Briceno and Financial Secretary Joseph Waight.

As we told you, he thinks that the Government contract for the Microsoft 365 Licenses, valued at 3.3 million dollars, which was awarded to Smart - officially known as Speednet Communications Limited - should be struck down. This contract was previously held by the Government-controlled Belize Telemedia Limited.

Peyrefitte is being represented by Dean Barrow, the former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. The Fin Sec and PM Briceno are being represented by Douglas Mendes, a Trinidadian Queen's Counsel, and former Appeal Court Judge. Then, there are 2 interested parties: Speednet/Smart the company which got the contract being challenged, and The National Trade Union Congress of Belize, which is being represented by attorney Darrell Bradley.

For today's extended hearing, Former PM Barrow spent an extended amount of time grilling his former point man, Financial Secretary Joseph Waight, in cross-examination about the entire bidding process.

Barrow then made extensive legal submissions pointing out all the missteps which he and his client, think that the leaders of the Finance Ministry - Briceno and Waight - made in the awarding of the contract. They say that this decision is tainted with illegality and bias, especially because the company which got the contract, is connected to Prime Minister's family.

This evening, we asked Peyrefitte for a brief comment on the case:

Darrell Bradley, the attorney for the NTUCB, has also made submissions that align with Peyrefitte's positions.

The Government's Attorney, Douglas Mendes, has had an opportunity to present some of his legal arguments.

The case continues on Monday morning.
