We note that a closer examination of the videos shows that what appears to be projectiles were also being hurled at police during the melee.
And events like that are why police are going hard tonight. Like the commissioner told us today, this is just the beginning.
That means more raids and, possibly, more detentions that lead to
arrests.
And the ComPol said if these gangs can't learn to live peacefully, then they belong behind bars.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"If it is that they are out there committing themselves, breaking the law, holding the good people of our city hostage, then as a police we have a responsibility to go after them and do what needs to be done and this crack down is going to continue and if the gangs don't get the message that they have to start to act like civilized beings to act among us then we must do what we can to get them behind bars. Shortly after police left the Martin's area, they got information, police went and found one mac ten fully automated handgun. That weapon is in police custody, we have dusted it for fingerprints, process it to see if we can get fingerprints from it and then it will go to the lab to see if it had been used in the commission of any crime."
"Certainly the police have to at all time ensure their safety and the safety of others and so while yes we do understand that the non-lethal ammunition is nothing compared to the lethal weapons of ammunitions that criminals may have, as the agents of the state, we try to see how we can do our job in such a way that we do not use force that is not necessary so while yes we do have those officers who would be carrying non-lethal ammunition, we also have those along with them who will have the lethal ammunition so if there is a need for the police to used the lethal ammunition then the officers use non-lethal ammunition as a first escalate then the lethal would then step in."
The Commissioner was traveling when he spoke to us today and says he will be back by Wednesday.
